Artist Lisa Park developed "Eunoia" and "Eunoia II" as a way to represent the effect that our emotions have on the world around us. Lisa believes that the energy we carry with us at any given point in time - be it happy, angry, scared, anxious, etc. - has a way of affecting that which exists outside of ourselves. Think of any time you've been sad and a friend immediately noticed without having to ask; there's something going on there that is deeper than just a look on your face. Lisa wanted to create an audio-visualization that represents this energy and the outward effect it can have.

Hooked up to an EEG headset, Lisa exhibits emotional values such as excitement and meditation that the EEG headset can then translate into sound waves. Electroencephalograms, or EEGs, are sensors that detect brainwaves and measures the frequency of brain activities. These sound waves produced from the EEG data are then transmitted to speakers underneath the pools of water surrounding her, and this creates the movement in each pool.

If you're wondering why Lisa chose to use 48 pools of water, it has to do with philosopher Baruch Spinoza's definitions of 48 different and distinct emotions. In Spinoza's work Ethics, he discusses the theory that all emotions are derived from three primaries - joy, pain, and desire - and are representative states of the mind and body corresponding to particular feelings.

The beginning of "Eunoia II" acts as a frame of reference for Lisa's ideology regarding emotions and their effect on the outside world. It serves as a kind of poetic nod to her inspiration and is the perfect lead-in to the actual installation revealed at about one minute in.

The term 'eunoia' translates to "beautiful thinking," an aptly chosen name for a project so intricately tied to the process of thought. Lisa explains her fascination with human thought even further:

"I have always believed that human emotions come with corresponding waves of energy that we carry within. When I am happy or sad there is an indescribable energy that somehow resonates in others. They feel my vibe, as if my energy is echoing off them. That is why I started 'Eunoia' and 'Eunoia II' in an attempt to create an audio-visualization of my emotional states. These performances have been therapeutic for me, providing a means of emptying my mind of thoughts."
