Vova Zagranovsky meticulously places 13,000 nails on a wooden surface and then wraps 24 kilometers of thread around them to create an incredible portrait of Justin Timberlake. This method is referred to as string art, and it takes a very special kind of thought process to be able to map out an image of this scale in this manner. A loose sketch helps Vova determine where to place all of the nails, but he has to be able to wrap the string accordingly to create the more subtle nuances of the portrait. To create the feeling of depth, Vova must use density to create areas of shadow: more layers of string create a stronger shadow. Imagine how difficult it must be to properly form complex features like eyes!
Though the video is only a mere three and a half minutes long, the entire process took 200 hours of working time. This stands as a true testament to level of devotion a piece like this requires - it would be no easy physical feat to wrap string for hundreds of hours! Watching the progression of the piece from start to finish will give you a serious appreciation of Vova's unique methodology.
