Painting is one of the most ancient and prolific art forms known to man, which has led to countless artists the world over seeking to find new ways to appropriate traditional styles into something altogether new. Nina Topinko and Nate Siggard are two artists who have completely re-imagined the art of painting, beautifully bridging the gap between analogue and digital painting techniques.
The pair painted a series of collaborative abstract paintings that would later become the focal point of a projection-mapping project aimed at bringing these pieces to life. The goal of these hybrid projection-paintings is to "expose forgotten imagination and transformational experiences for all to see," as expressed in the video's description. Each painting is created over hundreds of hours while the artists work in a state of flow, an almost meditative perceptual realm of creativity. Once finished, the paintings were recreated digitally so that they can be projected back onto themselves. The projections are altered versions of the completed painting so as to bring attention to specific aspects of the image, revealing at each turn a new perspective that was previously hidden.
Topinko and Siggard "invite you to forget what you think you know, and experience the joy and wonder which await you once you free your mind to infinite possibility and rediscover your authority as creator of your reality." Let go of your ideas of what a painting should be, and prepare to stretch your imagination around what a painting could be.
